✨💕 NO MAT MAY 🩷✨ By far my FAVORITE thi ✨💕 NO MAT MAY 🩷✨

By far my FAVORITE thing we have done this year.

Dancers started the month with some nerves. We worked on basic skills, feeling the differences between having the mat and using the marley on our feet and hands. We worked in AcroDANCE instead of just acro skills. Class by class I saw dancers wanting to try more bigger skills on the floor. We ended the month with a new comfortability doing almost all of our skills on the marley. A great way to prepare for nationals! And when we started back classes for June? The dancers requested to no longer use our squishy panel mats. They enjoy the option of marley or the carpet mat. They learned that some skills are actually easier without the instability of a mat. A huge WIN! ✨

And a bonus?? I let my intermediate dancers roll out the mat for 10 minutes at the end of class to work on their aerials. We gained more aerials in this one month alone than in the rest of the season 🪄🩷
I don’t usually post anything personal on this a I don’t usually post anything personal on this account but today I want to celebrate the one year anniversary of my Achilles rupture! From doing aerials with my students to a full rupture a week later, from a tour jete (in an adult class thank goodness). The sudden loss of mobility is a very strange feeling.

To all the studios where I teach, my students and families who stood by me I am so thankful for you. Five weeks non weight bearing and another 4 in the boot and a lot of time rebuilding stamina. During this whole process I took one day off of teaching (and spoiler alert it wasn’t the day of the rupture because I’m crazy 🤪)

I taught my first independent summer series, guest taught at multiple studios and learned even more about teaching with limited resources. Fortunately I’ve been teaching via zoom for so long I feel very comfortable teaching using descriptors. I even learned how to drive using hand controls!

Celebrating my first steps out of my boot with my girl Charli is a highlight of this video for me. Because of course it’s logical to go straight from the ortho to the studio haha!

To my assistants Payton, Eleanor and of course my number one girl McKenna I love you so much. And to my PT Amy (@dancedpt) I couldn’t have done it without you. You were one of the first people I reached out to post rupture and have been by my side since. I am so grateful for every minute with you. I have learned so much from you and taken much of it back to the studio. (And yes she has built me back up to being able to do a tour jete 🤪).

I’m still doing PT and I still don’t feel 100% back to where I once was and will probably never do an aerial again. But I’m so grateful to have been able to rehab the way I have, heal this injury non surgically, and learn so much along the way!
